4G (LTE) Phones in India

4G (LTE) enabled phones in India as of March 2015

2G/3G are the past mobile technologies. 2G was popular in 1990s, while 3G started to catch up in India since 2005. 2G is primarily a voice only service with minimum data support, while 3G provided faster internet speeds, upto few Mbps download speed.

LTE or 4G is the next major improvement that is catching up in India. it provides a speed upto 100 Mbps, in practice upto 50 Mbps. At this speed, 1GB data can be downloaded in 150 to 200 seconds, and a whole movie can be downloaded in 15 to 20 minutes.

LTE has two major variants - FDD and TDD based technologies. India and China predominantely use TDD technology. So any LTE phone should be compatible with TDD to work at India.

Many operators such as Airtel, Vodafone and Reliance are covering major cities already and have major expansion plans across India in the next few years. So, if you are buying a phone now, it is better to get a LTE enabled phone to get best deal for next few years.

Unless in 2G and 3G, LTE does not support voice inherently. Voice calls will continue to be routed through 2G/3G and data will use LTE. But voice over LTE is the actual technology which will handle all voice calls in future on LTE networks.

The following phones provide best deals with 4G/LTE modem technology as on March 2015.

LG G2 D802T Lenovo A6000

Lenovo Vibe X2 HTC Desire OnePlus One 64GB

It is advisable at this point of time not to purchase a high priced 3G only phone as soon you will be willing to switch to LTE for its enourmous data speeds. This will be the best deal on phone purchase at this point of time.
